For the Home

As someone with an inclination towards collecting things, I find it difficult to store and/or display everything. Spatial limitations often force creative, custom solutions. These pieces are the result of monetary limitations and the impulse to find these solutions myself.

I designed and built this bookshelf entirely within the confines of my 1-bedroom apartment. I designed it to be mounted to the top of a table, which established the footprint and height I was working with. I worked out the layout of the two uprights in tape on my floor (the digital rendering came much later).

It was made using only dimensional lumber from the hardware store, using a compound mitre saw, drill, and palm sander.

Cables and turnbuckles hold tension between the uprights to hold the shelves in place. This was designed so that the uprights could easily be reused in a different configuration (narrowing it simply means cutting the shelves and cables). Lack of access to a table saw inspired me to 3D print end caps for where the shelves meet the uprights. An aluminum diagonal brace was added after the unit was dismantled and stained.

On the bookshelf, I have stacks of wooden boxes made to store 2”x2” slides. There are several things that I joke about controlling the world market for, and these are one of them. They are like miniature treasure chests, and I use them to store small parts for projects. I designed this rack so I can easily retrieve one box, without disrupting the others.

I don’t intend to paint these, but would be interested in doing some renderings that play with color. This might be interesting as a product if scaled up and colorful (instead of this miniature card catalog).

I plan to CNC this version the next opportunity I have to get on a machine.
