Electric Menorah

The electric menorah is a staple for public display during the holidays because it does not use an open flame. The most common version utilizes flame-shaped lightbulbs. I decided to reinvent the electric menorah with photorealistic moving flames.

This proof-of-concept prototype uses three 5” lcd displays playing video loops reflected on transparent acrylic panels using the Pepper’s Ghost technique. The most famous use of this illusion is the ballroom scene in Disney’s Haunted Mansion attractions.

A wood enclosure conceals various electronic components. The next version will have the capability of “lighting” the candles individually.
